Over 1,000 people of all ages, but mostly local school students, participated in QPR training in 2015. The training lasts about an hour and is readily available for schools and any other community groups. The intent of QPR, as with the ASIST workshops, is to change the local culture and stigma surrounding mental illness by creating “mass public health awareness and basic education about suicide and its causes.” [QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention: The Model, Theory, and Research; Paul Quinnett, PhD; QPR Institute, 2012]. The more people who are aware of suicidal behavior and can refer those with suicidal idatin into professional treatment, the safer our community is from the risk of suicide.
